Call To Review PR1MA House Prices
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 11:

A Puteri UMNO delegate today urged the government to review house prices under the 1Malaysia People's Housing (PR1MA) programme in order to meet its original goal to help the middle-income group to own a house.

Gerik Puteri UMNO chief Salbiah Mohamed when debating the president's speech at the UMNO General Assembly 2015, said PR1MA houses, which were priced between RM100,000 and RM400,000 were unaffordable for that group.

"This is not for the middle-income group. That's why we often hear people say 'we can only see the house but only afford to own a house in a grave'.

""For instance, fresh graduates earning between RM2,500 and RM3,000 who bought a house costing RM200,000 will have to pay between RM1,000 and RM1,200 per month, almost half of their salaries.

"How can they afford to buy a house when they need to support their families, pay loans, on top of the burden of the high cost of living?" she said.

Salbiah said some people in the middle-income group assumed that government efforts to help them to own a house was 'merely rhetorics' due to the absurd house prices.

"The government had made many efforts. There are PR1MA, MyHome scheme, so what's the problem? The intention of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to introduce PR1MA is to help the middle-income group," she said.

As such, Salbiah suggested that the PR1MA key performance indicator should focus on how many people particularly the youngsters had successfully owned a house.

PR1MA was established under the PR1MA Act 2012 to develop and offer affordable housing at strategic locations for middle-income Malaysians with an average monthly household income of RM2,500 to RM10,000.
