GEORGE TOWN: The community has a role to play in making sure the implementation of waste separation at source beginning June next year is a success.

According to Penang Local Government Committee Chairman Chow Kon Yeow, each local community has to come out with solutions to implement the campaign at homes and factories.

I am quite happy to hear that the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) in Penang feels they also have a role to play in collecting recyclable waste.

"It can also become a revenue for the the local community," he said during a press conference on the last day of the Segregation of Waste at Source ""Lab"" this morning.

Earlier in his speech Chow said the state government was in the midst of preparing the by-law on waste segregation at the local authority level.

"Suggestions and ideas are important in the draft of the by-law so it can be thoroughly discussed", he said.

The three-day event organised by the office of the Penang State Secretary (SUK), local government division stakeholders from all levels of community discussed proposals on wastage management at source.

Among the categories of segregation at source that have been proposed during the workshop were villages, public housing program, high rise building, factories, shopping malls and food beverages outlet and hotels."
