If you are moving up in life, or just moving because of family or work, you will find that moving house is a veritably daunting task. One look at all you possessions and you start feeling overwhelmed! This is definitely a normal reaction, but you can still get through the packing and unpacking process in one peace if you prioritize and organize your things one by one.
Packing should begin about 2 months before you plan to move. Here is a rough timeline checklist to make sure you have everything under control:
2 months before moving
• Look for a moving company or a moving lorry to transport your belongings. Make sure the vehicle size matches the amount of things you need to transport
• Sort through everything and start throwing out stuff you don’t need
• If you have children, start processing their applications to a new school and get all the paperwork done
• Research on your new neighbourhood
• Contact banks, credit card companies, insurance, clubs and other organizations to inform them about your address change
• Budget the expenses for moving
• Start finishing off consumables in the house, like food, toiletries, laundry detergent etc.
• Gather your personal documents and important family documents to be carried with you or transported in a safer way by registered mail
• Start looking for boxes to fit all your belongings
• If you require regular attention from a specialist doctor, ask for a referral for a similar specialist in your new place
1 month before moving
• Start packing items that are hardly used and not so essential
• Start terminating your internet service, phone service, meal delivery and so on.
• Service your car and if you’re moving overseas, you need to start selling it online or through an agent
• Use up the last remains of your food in the house
• Plan how you and the rest of your family will go to your new residence
• Decide what basic necessities need be taken in your suitcase and start packing
• Start packing up things room by room.
• Label all boxes
• Separate valuables and personal documents to be carried with you during the trip
One week before moving
• Confirm your moving plans with the transport provider and finalize costs and estimated arrival time
• Prepare medication you need for at least 2 weeks
• Dry and detach water hoses
• Empty and defrost refrigerator at least 2 days before moving
Moving day
• Walk around the house, opening drawers and closets to make sure nothing has been left behind
• Make sure every box has been loaded into the moving van or lorry. The best way to keep track is to number each box.
• Leave instructions to your Landlord about your new address so that any mail that arrives after you’ve left can be forwarded to you
