So far there has always been many guides for new real estate agents starting out, in order to ensure that they get a good start and are able to successfully make it in the competitive world of property sales. However, it is also important that those senior agents in the industry for many years, and even many decades, also have a guide so that they don’t suffer from what many call seller’s burnout
Seller’s burnout is basically when someone in the sales line, including those is the real estate industry, become discouraged and lack the motivation to continue. It can happen to anyone, including those that have started their own agencies. These so called ‘Seller’s blues’ tend to show up when things get bad and sales slow down.
The causes of burnout or fatigue may not be so easily identified. In some people, these feelings of mental tiredness are temporary, but for some, it goes deeper and they may need professional help. For those not so severe bouts of mental burnout, here are some ways to cope:
Take a sabbatical
Take a real break, meaning switch off your work phone, ignore those e-mails and don’t think about fulfilling that sales target. Concentrate on healing yourself and your mind. If you have to, leave for another country or town where work and your colleagues won’t bother you.
Spend time with your family, especially your children. Read a favourite book and go for long walks. Take as long as a few months up to a year to recuperate and recharge. To fulfil your time productively, you may want to consider volunteering for a charity or other causes.
Celebrate the Small Achievements
When you’re this far into your career, small achievements may not mean as much as they did when you first started out. However, if you take a step back and really appreciate yourself for your efforts, you will find that even small achievements were not easy. Hence, buy yourself a cake, take your spouse out to a fancy dinner, visit the Museum or even stay in a fancy hotel for one night to reward yourself.
Adopt a Healthier Lifestyle
Cut down on smoking and drinking, eat more vegetables and fruits and make sure you get 7-8 hours of sleep daily. The old saying that ‘A healthy body produces a healthy mind’ stands true so try going to the gym or for a jog more regularly and more often.
Additionally, visit your doctor for a full body check-up and blood test regularly to avoid common chronic diseases.
Don’t Focus on the Negative
The worst thing you can do when you come home from work is to ruminate on whatever went wrong that day. If you can, keep a daily journal and write all the positive things that happened that day and when you’re feeling down, take the journal out and read all the good things that have happened. This will provide you the motivation and encouragement you need to carry on.
Learn to say ‘No’
You can tell when you’ve had enough on your plate and can’t take anymore, be it work or a social invitation. Learning the importance of having time to yourself to doing the things you really want is key in repairing your jaded constitution.
