Dealing with Bed Bugs in Your Home
12 Oct 2015
It is every person’s nightmare when you wake up one morning and your hands and feet are covered in itchy red spots and you are left scratching yourself crazy the entire day. You look it up on the internet, thinking you have just caught a deadly disease, when suddenly the truth is revealed by somebody else’s picture of the same red spots.
Your home has been invaded by bed bugs!
Those yucky blood sucking insects are in your home. What can you do? Well, first off, take a deep breath. Secondly, try not to blame yourself. Bed bugs are a common household pest and it does not mean that your house is dirty.
Although fighting bed bugs in your home is a long and challenging process, it is entirely possible to be bed bug free again. All it takes is patience and determination.
Bed bugs are very hard to kill simply because they can survive up to a year without feeding and spend the entire year hidden away.
Here are some ways you can battle those pesky critters:
1) If you were bitten as you slept, they are probably in your mattress. Either sun your mattress for a whole day, or wrap it with plastic to ensure that they cannot escape. In this way, you can starve them by keeping the cover on for up to a year or more.
2) Use rubbing alcohol and spray any bugs you see. Alcohol like ethanol can dry up these bed bugs instantly
3) For cleaning things like cushions, pillows, bedsheets and blankets, simply wash them in boiling hot water and dry them in a drier as heat kills bedbugs very effectively.
4) One of the most effective methods that can kill bedbugs is a powder called Diatomaceous Earth (D.E.). Although difficult to find in Malaysia (try online), sprinkling a little of this in places they may cross will cause them to dry out within 12 hours and die.
5) Bed bugs live and lay eggs is small holes and cracks in the wall or in wooden furniture. If you spot a nest, quickly vacuum the area to dislodge the eggs. Then wash the cracks with boiling hot water and spray bedbug insecticide (can be found in pharmacies).
6) If you have a pet cat or dog, check whether they have been bitten by bedbugs as bedbugs target mammalian animals as well.
